With the ever-increasing challenges facing URFA and other trade unions at multiple levels – locally, provincially, federally and internationally, in 2013 the URFA Executive Committee determined it was time to revisit the issue of affiliations to local, provincial and federal labour organizations. URFA is now a member of these various affiliations:

SAUT — Saskatchewan Association of University Teachers

This organization has been recently revived with a mandate to lobby the provincial government for an increase in resources to advanced education in the Province.

CAUT — Canadian Association of University Teachers

CAUT represents Canadian universities and other post-secondary faculty associations who apply for membership. Based in Ottawa, CAUT helps all its members with bargaining, grievance and academic freedom matters, provides advice and lobbies the federal government on matters of advanced education and legislation and policies which could negatively impact its membership. URFA attends two council meetings each year as well as forums for presidents, grievance chairs, chief negotiators, equity chairs, etc.

NU-CAUT — National Union of the Canadian Association of University Teachers*

NU-CAUT represents only unionized associations from the university and post-secondary education sector. In order to affiliate to the CLC, which is a requirement of affiliation to the SFL, a union needs to affiliate through its national body. NU-CAUT is our national organization for this purpose. NU-CAUT’s triennial convention is held in conjunction with the spring CAUT Council meeting and the CLC triennial convention.

CLC — Canadian Labour Congress

This is the national house” of labour for union members from across Canada. The national congress meets in convention once every three years. The CLC represents approximately 3.3 million unionized workers. It lobbies the federal government on issues affecting working people in Canada and is also engaged in international work through the International Labour Organization (ILO).

SFL — Saskatchewan Federation of Labour*

This is the provincial labour organization for unions in Saskatchewan. There is an annual convention in October which alternates between Saskatoon and Regina. The SFL sponsors various educational activities throughout the year and its committees are a great resource which benefits URFA. The SFL represents over 100,000 unionized workers in Saskatchewan.

RDLC — Regina District Labour Council*

This Labour Council is comprised of affiliated local unions in the Regina and district area. It meets once a month and holds its annual general meeting in January of each year.

* The 2019 URFA Executive made the decision to temporarily suspended payment of member dues for NUCAUT, the SFL and the RDLC for the 2019/2020 fiscal year. Please contact URFA if you have any questions about this decision.
