Sessional Advocacy Committee

The Sessional Advocacy Committee meets monthly to advocate on behalf of sessionals. Sometimes we must address issues that have arisen and at other times we try to be more proactive. For example, we try to mark Fair Employment Week (which falls in October each year) with an activity such as a social gathering or an information session. Our goals for events like this include providing an opportunity for relationship building between sessionals as well as between sessionals and URFA. We have celebrated sessionals over the years with recognition based on nominations and also through bookmarks (bookmarks have profiles of sessionals on one side and a remark “Did You Know…? on the other side) prepared for the occasion.

We also try to have an information session or at least a mailout that addresses common questions during the winter semester. Topics in the past have included Information about bargaining or information on the value that sessionals bring to the university. As well there is always an opportunity for sessionals to share experiences, concerns and questions.

If a Faculty has an orientation session for sessionals and we hear about it, we will be there. Sometimes we are invited and other times we will request an opportunity to address our members. Both the chairperson and our staff liaison will address the assembled groups, informing them of particular sessional issues and then answer questions of the group and/or individuals separately.

If you have an idea for an event that will support our mandate of advocating on behalf of sessionals, please email the chair of our group.

All members of the Sessional Advocacy Committee receive a stipend for their participation in accordance with the Sessional Honorariums Policy.

The terms are for one year - May 1 to April 30 of the following year. The committee meets monthly.
